Very few bands have sung to the very souls of Indians of all ages like the magical trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, they have predominantly composed music for films in Hindi, though their repertoire spans a wide range of five languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and English.
Composed of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, the trio formed when the three of them worked on a jingle for a Pepsi ad. Since then, they started to compose for ads as a trio with Shankar being the main vocalist, Ehsaan, the guitarist and Loy on keyboards.
The trio were set to debut as film composers in Mukul Anand’s film Dus, but the film remained incomplete due the director's death. They worked on a few films before composing for Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir, which marked their entry to mainstream cinema.
The trio have frequently collaborated with actor Farhan Akhtar's production house Excel Entertainment and director Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Most of the lyrics for the songs composed by the trio are penned by legendary lyricists Javed Akhtar and Gulzar.
Over the years, the trio have composed for over fifty soundtracks with major hits such as ‘Bol Na Halke Halke’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Mitwa’, ‘Sajda’, 'Dil Chahata Hai' and many others.
Their distinct musical style is a result of the synergy of the three, each member bringing their knowledge of different musical techniques. Shankar’s deep understanding of Carnatic and Hindustani vocal traditions combines with Ehsaan’s mastery of Rock and Loy’s virtuoso mastery of the synthesiser.
Shankar Mahadevan has been felicitated with the Padma Shri Award for his contribution to Film Music. Ehsaan Noorani is the only Indian musician to have endorsed a signature line, 'The Ehsaan Noorani Fender Squire' signature series, for Fender Guitar. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have been the recipient of numerous awards including three filmfare awards and the National Film Award for Best Music Direction.
